We Generate Low Temperature Plasma

✦ What is Plasma?

Classical 3-state model:

Plasma = “Fourth State”:

Low Temperature Plasma

The plasma of the sun’s surface is approximately 10,000°F (5,500°C).

✦ What are applications of Low Temperature Plasma?

Gas-to-gas conversion: convert gas molecules to alternate forms

Example:   CO2 → CO + O2
i.e. Carbon Dioxide to Carbon Monoxide + Oxygen

✓carbon monoxide used as fuel or feedstock for other chemical processes

Gas-to-solid conversion: split gas molecules into elemental forms

Example:   CH4 → C + H2      i.e. Methane to Carbon + Hydrogen

✓ carbon used as fuel or feedstock for many processes
✓ hydrogen used as fuel or feedstock for other chemical processes

Plasma plug…

replaces spark plug…

to enhance ignition

(full video)

Advantages of plasma plug over conventional spark plug:

  • reduction in ignition time
  • enhanced combustion
  • increased fuel economy
  • lower exhaust temperature
  • increased power & torque
  • lower thermal NOx (Nitrogen Oxides)
  • reduced regulated emissions in exhaust

✦ Opportunities / Possibilities

  • completing the Carbon cycle
    • reduces global warming, obviates need for “CCS” (carbon capture and storage) by converting Carbon Dioxide (CO2) to carbon monoxide (CO, a fuel) and oxygen (O2)
  • natural gas (methane) to other chemicals with reduced pollution and energy requirements
    • our technology, requiring considerably less energy and operating at lower temperatures and normal atmospheric pressure, offers significant advantages over conventional steam-methane reforming (SMR) and Haber-Bosch processes
  • can be scaled to commercial / industrial levels
    • potential exists to scale up our technology as needed
